Customer lifetime value
How much your customers are worth over time, and how to use that number.
Lifetime value is the total of a customer's completed orders. The average includes customers with at least one completed order. It is a revenue measure; it does not account for your costs or profit margin.
Your lifetime value at a glance
Ask Claude for your lifetime value summary. You get:
- Average lifetime value across all customers who have bought from you.
- Total revenue from those customers, and how many customers that is.
- Customer counts by spend range, in your store's currency. See spend ranges for the boundaries.
Use your store's currency in the example questions below.
Try asking:
- "What's my average customer lifetime value, and how many purchasing customers do I have?"
- "How are my customers spread across spend bands? Show it as a chart."
- "What share of my customers have spent more than $500 with us?"
Putting it to work
Plan within your budget. "I have a win-back budget of $500. Compare offers for my selected audience within that budget."
Find the customers worth protecting. "List customers who have spent more than $500 but haven't ordered in the last 60 days."
Move people up a band. "How many customers are in the $100 to $250 band? Draft a message nudging them towards their next order."
Compare with your at-risk customers. "Take my 10 most at-risk customers. Which of them have spent more than my average lifetime value?" See At-risk customers.
Tips
- Lifetime value here is what customers have actually spent, not a prediction of what they will spend.
- It counts completed orders VYG has seen over the available order history. For the all-time figure straight from Shopify, ask Claude to check Shopify.
- Refunds are tracked separately. Ask "How much have my top customers had refunded?" if that matters for your decision.
